Prenatal Massage: Bolstering Best Practices Explained.

During pregnancy, your body is constantly adapting—so your massage experience should, too. At Summit Therapeutics in Centennial, we offer customized prenatal massage for each trimester, using positioning that prioritizes both comfort and safety.

Two of the most common prenatal positions are: bolster-assisted prone positioning (ie, face down with a special pillow) and sidelying. Here’s what to know about both.

The Magic of the Bolster

We use a specially designed prenatal bolster that allows many pregnant clients to lie face-down safely during their session. It supports the chest and hips while creating space for the belly, relieving pressure from the spine and sacrum.

This position is often ideal for:

  • Low back pain

  • Glute and hip tension

  • Clients in the second trimester with minimal belly sensitivity

  • Those who find sidelying uncomfortable

It provides access to deep muscular relief in the back and hips while allowing the client to fully relax.

When Sidelying Is a Better Fit

Sidelying is a wonderful option for:

  • Clients in the third trimester

  • Anyone experiencing heartburn or shortness of breath when face-down

  • Pelvic instability or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD)

  • High-risk pregnancies or personal preference

Sidelying allows us to work the entire body while keeping you supported, cool, and comfortable—especially when we use soft pillows and body cushions.

At every session, we’ll check in with you about what’s working, what’s not, and how your body feels.
