white woman holding her jaw gentle as though it's tender - a potential client in need of TMJ massage at The Studios at Summit Therapeutics

Relief for jaw pain, clicking, grinding, clenching, headaches, constant facial tension, and more.

At Summit Therapeutics, we are proud to house massage therapists that specialize in TMJ, including intraoral, massage techniques.

Their targeted approach releases deep tension in the jaw muscles, helps reduce jaw pain, improve mobility, and relieve the tension patterns that often lead to headaches, neck pain, and teeth clenching.

What Is TMJ Massage?

TMJ massage is a specialized therapeutic massage technique focused on the muscles that control the jaw.

The temporomandibular joints connect your bottom jaw bone to your skull. The joint relies on several muscles to function properly, including the masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and more.

When these muscles become tight or overworked, they can create symptoms such as jaw pain, limited opening, headaches, and facial tension.

TMJ massage helps release those muscles so the jaw can move more comfortably.

What Is Buccal (Intraoral) Massage?

Some jaw muscles, like the medial and lateral pterygoids, can only be accessed from inside the mouth.

During buccal massage, your therapist wears medical gloves and gently works the muscles of the cheek and jaw from the inside of the mouth while supporting the tissue externally.

This allows access to deeper muscles that are difficult to treat through the skin alone.

Clients are often surprised how much tension releases with this technique, especially in the masseter and pterygoid muscles, which play a major role in jaw clenching and TMJ pain.

How TMJ Massage Helps Jaw Pain

TMJ massage addresses the muscular component of TMJ dysfunction, which is often a major contributor to pain.

  • Reduce Jaw Muscle Tension

Massage helps release tight muscles that pull the jaw out of alignment or limit comfortable movement.

  • Improve Jaw Mobility

By reducing muscle restriction, many clients notice easier opening and closing of the jaw.

  • Relieve Headaches and Facial Pain

Jaw tension frequently contributes to headaches, sinus pressure, and facial pain patterns.

  • Reduce Clenching and Grinding

Relaxing the jaw muscles can reduce unconscious clenching patterns that occur during stress or sleep.

Is Buccal Massage an Alternative to Botox or Night Guards?

Many clients seek TMJ massage as a natural alternative when they want to avoid:

  • repeated Botox injections

  • long-term reliance on night guards

  • ongoing jaw pain management without addressing muscle tension

While dental devices and medical treatments can be helpful for some people, massage therapy focuses on relaxing the muscles that often drive the pain pattern in the first place. By addressing muscle tension directly, some clients experience lasting improvements in comfort and mobility.

What Happens During a TMJ Massage Session?

Your session begins with an assessment of the jaw, neck, and surrounding muscles.

Treatment may include:

  • external jaw and facial massage

  • neck and upper shoulder work

  • cranial and scalp techniques

  • intraoral (buccal) massage using medical gloves

Intraoral work is always explained beforehand and performed with your full consent.

Many clients feel significant relief even after one session, though chronic TMJ patterns often improve most with a short series of treatments.

Important Note About Scope of Practice

Massage therapists work with the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the jaw.

We do not diagnose TMJ disorders, provide dental care, or replace treatment from dentists, orthodontists, or physical therapists.

Instead, TMJ massage can serve as a supportive therapy that helps reduce muscle tension and discomfort.

Many clients use massage alongside dental or medical care for the best results.

Who Benefits From TMJ Massage?

TMJ massage may help if you experience:

  • jaw pain or tightness

  • clicking or popping in the jaw

  • headaches near the temples

  • facial tension

  • teeth clenching or grinding

  • limited jaw opening

  • neck pain connected to jaw tension

It is especially helpful for people whose symptoms worsen during periods of stress or prolonged computer work.
